Adriana - Cup for the best female MMA fighter on World amateur MMA ChampionshipAs women start MMA training earlier and earlier, there is no surprise we start to find more and more make their MMA debuts at a very young age.

A prime example is Croatian fighter Adriana Vukovich. At age 14, Vukovich stepped into a ring and won her first MMA match. Since then, Vukovich continues to fight and win titles when she can in all combat sports, including kickboxing, BJJ, and FILA MMA.

We got a chance to talk Vukovich about training in her native Croatia and her goals as a fighter.

—–

Wombat Sports: Tell us a little about yourself.

Adriana Vukovich: I was born on 1998 in small town Đakovo (Eastern Croatia). I am 15 years old. I’m first grade of high school, I attend Gymnasium A. G. Matoša in Đakovo. I like music, wildlife, dogs, cats and sports of course. I have sister and two brothers.

I started to train Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 2008, my father was my coach in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club “Triangle”.

Since Christmas I’m BJJ blue belt under master Roberto Atalla (Rio Grappling Club).

Also I train Muay thai, Boxing and MMA. i fight in 8 disciplines: BJJ, Grappling, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, K-1, Full contact, Boxing and in MMA.

Wombat: What got you interested in combat sports?

Vukovich: Since I was a little girl I liked to watch fights from Croatian fighter Mirko Filipović CRO COP and my cousin Stefan BLITZ Leko too. One day I watched Mirko’s MMA fight and he lost from Minotauro on armbar. I did not knew what kind of technique was that. Comentator started thalking about BJJ. I didn’t know what was BJJ was either. We googled it and we found it so interesting and cool. My father found club in Croatia but it was too far from my town. So he founded BJJ club Triangle in my town Đakovo. Although I liked watching fights on TV, I didn’t train BJJ at first. About one year later I started to train too. I liked it and I stayed in club. I got so interested at BJJ after my first fight. I found that I really like to fight on competitions, and I also found out that the winning is the best feeling ever. I train BJJ since 2008, Muay Thai and kickboxing since 2012, and Boxing and MMA since 2013.

Adriana vs. adulte blue beltW.S.: What do you enjoy about it?

A.V.: I just like fighting. I’m not a gladiator, but I just love combat sports and I really can’t describe how I feel when I am training and when I am fighting. I like to be very dominant in my every fight, and I respect every one of my opponents.

W.S.: How has your friends and classmates reacted to it?

A.V.: My friends support me so much and I am very blessed that I have all of them in my life. They wish me luck for every competition and they are very happy when I bring gold medal home. After every competition they have so much questions and they are so curious.

W.S.: How about your family?

A.V.: My family is very supportive. They are proud of me and I am very grateful to have them. I couldn’t be what I am now without them.

W.S.: Who do you look up to in fighting?

A.V.: Sometimes I’m trying to copy styles of certain fighters when I’m in a fight, but in fights and in every situation in life, my idol is every man or woman who isn’t afraid to do something new and who is following her/his dreams.

(With that being said), my older brother Denny was a role model to me, he is triple BJJ European juvenile Champion and double junior World Grappling Champion (by FILA rules).

W.S.: How do you feel about the future of females in fighting?

A.V.: I don’t like what many people think and talk about females who are fighting in MMA. I think that there are no differences, it doesn’t matter are you female or male. The important thing should be how much you love that sport and how much you can give of yourself to be successful. I think that it will always be some sort of discrimination of WMMA and that we must fight with that too so that our future can be better :).

Adriana Vukovic - finale (1)W.S.: What comes naturally to you in fighting? What have you found difficult?

A.V.: In my fights everything what I do comes so naturally. At my fight-time I’m thinking just on fight, nothing else. I’m always trying to be one step in front of my opponent and have all answers on every situations in a fight. Nothing is difficult when you are perfectly prepared for the fight.

W.S.: You started fighting in MMA this past year at age 14. How did this come about?

A.V.: I have a lot of experience in BJJ and Grappling fights, and I had a few fights in Muay thai, Boxing and Kickboxing too. My father have one friend Bernard Ban who said that I should fight in MMA and that he knows a few girls who are training MMA too. He was the organizer of the Croatian MMA championship. That sounded very interesting to me. I love MMA so of course I wanted to try that too. My nose was broken on that competition, but I won golden medal, but medal was more important haha :) . Since that experience I can’t live without MMA.

W.S.: There have been many Croatian fighters that have made their mark on a global scale, but all have been male. What does it mean to you to be one of the first female MMA stars to breakout out in your country?

A.V.: I am very honored to be one of the first MMA female fighters in Croatia who contribute to Croatia. I just love MMA equally as my life… I think that MMA is my life actually and I will be very grateful to show my best in world MMA organizations one day. If I get that opportunity I can promise that I will not let down my country and everyone who supports me.

W.S.: Europe has expanded in terms of MMA opportunities. What does it mean to you to see more females in Europe take up the sport?

A.V.: It means a lot to me because that means that maybe even I could be on world MMA stage one day and show them what I have got.

W.S.: What are your aspirations in fighting?

A.V.: I’m calm before every fight, I always know what I have to do and show in a fight.

I can’t lie, I like winning, but my goal in every fight, no matter which discipline is it, is to show my best and to be better from one fight to another fight and at the age of 18 be invited to Invicta or UFC.

W.S.: Anything you want to add/thank?

A.V.: I would like to thank my family, especially my father who is my biggest support, to my friends, to my hometown Đakovo, to my professors and school director. And of course I can’t forget my coaches, they are playing a big role in my film called life and I know that I can always count on their help and advice. I would also thank Conan Silveira, Mr. Stanley Day and Duomachy. I am very grateful to all of them and I am hoping that they are proud of me.

There is a tight knot group of Hawaiian female fighters and each are wanting to make their mark on the international scene.

One fighter that has started to make that leap is Rachael Ostovich, who has fought in the mainland U.S. a time or two. Undefeated as an amateur, she recently dropped from bantamweight to flyweight and is looking to impress some major MMA promotions this weekend in her pro debut against Jennifer Liou at Destiny MMA in Hawaii.

We talked to Ostovich about turning pro and her goals in 2014.

—–

Wombat Sports: Why the decision to go pro?

Rachael Ostovich: The decision to go Pro was mainly the call of my dad and coach, “Bob-O” Ostovich. He wanted to make sure I was ready first. But as the competition began to slim, I was almost forced to go pro especially after these last two title fights. I’ve also been competing against mainland talent as an amateur so the transition seemed natural.

Wombat: You are heading into this fight as a flyweight. Can you tell us your thoughts of the division and why the decision to drop?

Ostovich: My thoughts on this division is that there is a lot of up and coming talent that will be transitioning to the pro ranks soon so the division will be a very deep and exciting one. I feel that I could do quite well as a flyweight. I’ve recently made the transition down from 135 and feel strong at the flyweight division.

W.S.: There seems to be a huge support system of female fighters in Hawaii. How has it been to see the fighters on the island start to make an impact on the MMA scene?

R.O.: Hawaii has got to be one of the most supportive mma communities in the world. It’s really more like one big ohana (family) as we’ve recently experienced in this last week’s events where our gym caught fire and rendered it unusable. Even or opponents’ coaches were extending a helping hand and offering their facilities to us to train for this upcoming bout- against them! Its humbling and an honor to be a part of this little mma hotbed in Hawaii. It was also extremely exciting to see our Hawaii boys do so well in their recent UFC wins.

W.S.: Can you tell us about your opponent? What are you expecting in this fight?

R.O.: I know my opponent is a tough Jiu Jitsu fighter who will be looking for the submission. Im really excited to fight her and have been training and preparing for her in particular. I am expecting an awesome pro debut for the both of us. I know she is ready to bring it… I sure am!

W.S.: What are your goals in 2014?

R.O.: My goals in 2014 is to break out in the WMMA scene and possibly compete for a title shot as a pro. I know I have a lot to learn and I am eager to put in the hard work and discipline it takes to get to that level. My best is yet to come in Christ Jesus!

W.S.: Anything you’d like to add/thank?

R.O.: I’d like to thank my Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Without him I would definitely not be here today. I’d also like to Thank my parents and family for always being so supportive with my daughter while I train. Also props to my wonderful team mates who sharpen me everyday. Big Mahalo to all my supporters/sponsors- Maili Sunset Bar & Grill, Ho’aloha Construction, Island Athletics, MMA COMIX, Castagnetti Corp., Powerhouse/808Top Team and SUBMISSION Fitness. Thank you, also to Jay Bolos and family for always putting on the best MMA shows in Hawaii and making my career possible.

Future Stars – Garces Sisters

garces sisters 01On the other side of the planet, two sisters are looking to make an impact in their home country.

Tamara and Samantha Garces have won multiple title in BJJ and looking to follow fellow Australian fighters like Bec Hyatt and Alex Chambers to fight for major promotions like InvictaFC and the UFC.

We took time to talk to the pair about their training and their goals in MMA.

——

Wombat Sports: What got you interested in combat sports?

Tamara Garces: What got me interested in combat sports was mainly my Dad. He has always enjoyed watching the UFC and other forms of combat sports and through his influence I quickly became just interested as he is.
Samantha Garces: My dad got me interested in combat sports, when he’d watch UFC and boxing I’d watch it with him and it was always so interesting.
Tamara in compeititon

Tamara in compeititon

W.S.: What do you enjoy about it?

Tamara: What I enjoy about doing Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing is that I am constantly learning new things that could help me in all sorts of life threatening and dangerous situations. I also love the health benefits and the way that it has helped me stay healthy and fit.

Samantha: What I enjoy most about doing jiu jitsu is doing comps, coming first and bashing boys. what I like about kick boxing most is learning cool combos.

W.S.: How has your friends and classmates reacted to it?

T.G.: When I first started Jiu Jitsu and told my friends about it they started laughing and swinging their arms and legs everywhere ad started screaming words “hee-ya” and “wham”. That went on for a while but after I (constantly) explained to them what I actually do they don’t do that… as much. Now that I have won a few titles, they like to brag about me and tell basically everyone who meets me. My friends are really supportive about my Jiu Jitsu but just get a little frustrate that I can’t go out and do things with them because I’m at training. But that doesn’t really bother me because I know that all the hard work I’m doing now will pay off in the future… but then again it all ready has.

S.G.: I didn’t tell any of my friends [except for my best friend] because one day i may need or want to put them in a standing arm bar :)

W.S.: How about your family?

T.G.: As I mentioned earlier my Dad is really, really into Jiu Jitsu and any other form of martial arts. My Mum isn’t as into it as my Dad is but she is still really enthusiastic about it and it super proud of us. My younger sisters both really into it especially my baby sister… ufc is her favourite show.

S.G.: Both my parents are extremely supportive especially dad as my mum doesn’t really understand it, she just tells us to go hard and beat everyone.

W.S.: Who do you look up to in fighting?

T.G. : my parents are my biggest inspiration for everything but in fighting I really look up to a few Australian Jiu Jitsu girls who have really inspired me to chase my dreams. But Ronda Rousey is definitely my favourite fighter and my biggest inspiration in fighting.

S.G.: I look up to John Jones and Ronda Rousey they have both inspired me a lot.

Samantha in competition

Samantha in competition

W.S.: How do you feel about the future of females in fighting?

T.G.: I think the future is bright for females in fighting. We’re so lucky to have been able to start at such a young age and at the time we have. Other women never had that opportunity but we have them to thank for where female fighting is today. They’ve paved the way for younger female fighters and have given us an easier road to travel on in terms of achieving our goals.

S.G.: I feel it’s going to grow more and become much bigger especially because in the future I’m gonna be a professional fighter.

W.S.: What comes naturally to you in fighting? What have you found difficult?

T.G.: Most of the things I’ve done in Jiu Jitsu have come naturally to me except for when it comes to things that involve a lot of flexibility but I have improved. Kickboxing has been ok but I’ve only just started and don’t know much. I think one of the most difficult things for me was moving from gi to no gi and having to loose all of my grips but I think I’ve got the hang of things now.

S.G.: The main thing that comes natural to me in BJJ is winning and most difficult was changing from gi to no gi. in kick boxing I find a lot difficult because I’ve just started.

W.S.: Being from Australia, are you seeing more opportunity for females in fighting sports?

T.G.: From what I’ve seen, there isn’t very many female fighters here in Australia but I can definitely say that is improving.

S.G. : There aren’t many female fighters in Australia but don’t worry cause in the future i’ll be up there.

W.S.: It is popular for many girls here in the U.S. to take up high school wrestling. Is that something you are looking into?

T.G.: Unfortunately for us we do not have that opportunity. We both go to an all girls high school and don’t have wrestling as a choice of sport.

S.G.: We go to an all girls school that’s super annoying and they don’t do many sports there so we have basically no chance of doing wrestling:(

W.S.: Would you like to travel to different countries to compete? What countries would you like to go to?

T.G.: I would definitely love to travel to other countries to compete. In the near future, we both hope to travel to compete in Abu Dhabi and also in America.

S.G.: I would love to travel round the world places like america, Abu Dhabi and Brazil to compete.

W.S.: What are your aspirations in fighting?

T.G.: I aspire to one day be the world champion. I would also love to open up my own gyms all over the world and be able to travel the world teaching people the skills I learnt in martial arts.

S.G.: i hope to one day to become the world champion, and open up my own gym and of cause become a famous UFC fighter.

W.S.: Anything you want to add/thank?

T.G.: I would like to thank all my coaches and my parents. I would also like to thank Jesus for always giving strength and courage during my fights and for protecting me on and off the mats.

S.G.: I would like to thank my mum and dad for supporting me and all my instructors. I would also like to thank my heavenly Father the Lord Jesus Christ for always giving me the strength and courage I need during my fights.

Psalm 144:1 BLESSED be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight.

The first ever female Ultimate Fighter will have to wait 2 years to make her second step into the octagon.

Pena is expected to have surgery on her knee in L.A. next week and will be out for two years due to tears on her  ACL, MCL, LCL, Meniscus and hamstring. This is the third time Pena had an injury on her knee.

It was a slow January for the Unified rankings as only a few minor changes happened.

Due to inactivity, Shayna Baszler has dropped off the top 10 bantamweights. Since her TUF matches were exhibitions, they didn’t count on her record. Tonya Evinger moves to #10 in the division.

With her loss to Delaney Owen, Sarah Alpar has dropped off the flyweight top 10. Julia Berezikova (now #7), Juliana Werner (now #8), and Nina Ansaroff (now #9) move up a spot.  DeAnna Bennett enters at #10.

Even though there was no change in the strawweight top 10, Jessica Aguilar remains at #1 and gains her first major title at strawweight.

The featherweights and atomweights also stay pat..
