Tiburcio

Tiburcio

The new Unified rankings are out with only one change in the strawweight top 10.  With her win this past weekend,  InvictaFC signee Herica Tiburcio has entered into the list, taking the 10 spot. She bumps Bec Hyatt to #12.

You can read the complete April 2014 Unified rankings here.

Paige Van Zant has signed to the UFC directly and won’t be a part of the Ultimate Fighter.

The now 20 year old is one year shy of the 21 year old age limit due to alcohol being available in the house.

There are still unconfirmed reports that the Brazilians, Claudia Gadelha and Juliana Lima, will also be signed directly to the UFC and forego TUF 20, because of the language barrier.

UFC champion Ronda Rousey has gotten her way and will part with her management, at least partly.

Through arbitration, the California State Athletic Commission has released Rousey from a three year deal she made with Fight Tribe Management. However, this only bans Fight Tribe from getting fees from Rousey’s fight purses. Outside projects including her acting career, modeling, and promotional gigs are still in effect, but Rousey can fight that part of the contract in the California Superior Court; which her attorney Steven Bash intends on doing.

Two female fights are scheduled for Lappeenranta Fight Night 10 in Finland May 17. Vuokko Katainen will face Julia Borisova and Suvi Salmimies will take on a fighter to be determained.

Amateur prospect and WMMA Press Award winner Susie Wyatt will be back in action April 9th as she face Ronnie Lawrence at Fight Hard MMA in St. Louis April 19. Wyatt (7-3) has only been stopped once in her career. Lawerence is currently undefeated at 6-0 and has finished all her opponents.

Merrill

Merrill

On the Wombat Sports podcast at 1 p.m. pst/4 p.m. est, we will have amateur fighter Carissa Merrill, who will be a part of an historic half female and half male card in Utah.

You can listen here live on Sunday.

Rumors

Gina Carano stated on “The Arsenio Hall Show” this week she will be meet with UFC president Dana White next week to talk about a possible comeback.

You can watch her appearance here.

According to Holly Holm’s coach Mike Winkeljohn, Holly Holm’s management will try to go back to the bargaining table with the UFC after her match this weekend at Legacy. He says Holm is opening to fight InvictaFC featherweight champion Cyborg Justino and Holm’s management is looking to do a pay-per-view event if that happens.

Holly Holm got her first piece of MMA gold this past Friday, but not without injury.

The undefeated striking phenom took home the initial Legacy 135 title in her hometown of Albuquerque, NM with a fifth round TKO over Brazilian standout Julie Werner.

Holm (7-0) would control most of the match in the center of the cage with her kickboxing, with Werner trying to work against the fence with knees. Holm broke her arm due to a blocked headkick in the first round, which wasn’t known to anyone besides Holm at the time.

Holm continued her offence in round two, almost finishing the fight with liver kicks to Werner. Rounds three and four saw Werner being the aggressor, but Holm’s punching was just too fast and was able to dodge most of Werner’s punches.

A head kick would drop Werner in round five, but it would a few punches on the ground would be needed to make the ref stop the contest at 1:50.

Holm stated she doesn’t have a timeline on a return as she is weighing her rehab options.

In the coming days, we will be previewing the upcoming Tuff-n-uff strawweight tournament. The winner will get a contract to InvictaFC.

The semi-finals will be April 11 in Vegas and can be seen online at GoFightLive.tv for $10.

Laura Uyeda 02

Arkansas’s Laura Uyeda is ready to make an instant impact on the national MMA scene.

Undefeated in her career, Uyeda is a blue belt in BJJ. She started her career with three first round finishes and is looking for win #6 against Molly Wren-Holmes and earn her ticket to the finals.

Wombat Sports:  How did you get started in MMA?

Laura Uyeda: I’ve competed in sports for most of my life; however, my experience with martial arts began four years ago at Westside MMA where I began training and competing in bjj.  I have a competitive spirit and I’m quick to learn.  I won my first Jiu-jitsu tournament after three weeks of training.  My coaches, Matt Hamilton and Roli Delgado, were interested in seeing how I would do in the cage.  After feeling the thrill of winning my first MMA fight, I just couldn’t stop and I now I want to see how far I can go in the sport.

Laura Uyeda 03Wombat: Can you tell us something about your gym and training partners and how they have been helpful in training?  We know one of the best BJJ female black belts Hillary Williams is a coach there…

Uyeda: There is an outstanding depth of experience at Westside MMA in Little Rock, AR.  We have coaches in judo, bjj, boxing, muay thai, etc., who are extremely knowledgeable in their areas of expertise.  They all help me implement techniques into my game to help me become a well-rounded MMA fighter.  No matter your goals, we all have something to contribute as teammates helping each other improve and achieve.

W.S.: These are going to be shorter two minute rounds versus the usual 3 minutes.  How are you preparing and is it something you are looking forward to?

L.U.: My preparation for the fight is similar to training for my previous three minute round fights.  I’m training to be active on my feet, on the ground, or wherever the fight takes me.  I’m definitely looking forward to it, because I know the fight is going to be fast pace and action packed.  There will be a sense of urgency to get in there and fight hard from beginning to end.  It will be a fun and exciting fight.

W.S.: The South has made huge strides in developing female talent as of late.  How do you feel female fighting is developing in your area?

L.U.: It’s exciting to see the growing awareness for women’s contributions to MMA, from more publicized promotions such as the UFC and Invicta FC to smaller local shows.  Gyms here are encouraging and supportive to women wanting to participate.  Fight shows are striving to find and promote female talent.  I only started fighting a little over a year ago; the fight opportunities I’ve had this past year were not available in the years before.  Now I am able to represent Arkansas in Tuff-N-Uff’s four women MMA tournament in Las Vegas and that’s a big deal.  I hope to encourage other up and coming fighters in my area.

W.S.: This is the first time you will be fighting outside the south versus some of the toughest amateur fighters.  How do you feel going into the tournament?

L.U.: Tuff-N-Uff is a well-respected fight promotion and I am excited to have been selected for this unique opportunity.  I currently have a 5-0 record, so I know that I am entering this tournament with solid fundamentals.  This is an extremely dynamic sport; however, and I know that I will be facing tough competitors each with her own strengths.  My biggest asset is my eagerness to learn, so I am ready to face new challenges, gain more experience, and grow as a fighter.  I am confident in my abilities and I am determined to win.

W.S.: What would it mean to you to win this tournament and fight for Invicta?

L.U.: I am ecstatic to have this opportunity to fight for Tuff-N-Uff with the chance to be part of Invicta FC.  Invicta FC has made great strides in the growth of women’s MMA.  It would be an honor for me to be among this elite group of female athletes and to take part in promoting the future growth of women’s MMA.  I want to represent the sport as a positive role model and be a successful representation of my Westside MMA family.

W.S.: Anything you want to add/thank?

L.U.: I want to thank my coaches and training partners at Westside MMA. Thank you to my family and friends who support me.

After Amanda Nunes had to withdraw from her match with Sarah Kaufman next week due to a thumb injury, MMA fans will get a rematch of what was “Fight of the Year” nominee last year.

Leslie Smith will get a second shot at Sarah Kaufman at the TUF Nations finale this coming Wednesday, April 16, in Quebec City, Canada. The UFC made the announcement tonight. Kaufman has had both Shayna Baszler and Nunes pull out of the fight due to injury in the past week, with Smith campaigning via twitter to fill the spot.

Kaufman (16-2-1) is coming what was a split decision loss to Jessica Eye, but was turned into a no-contest by the Texas State Athletic commission. Kaufman has wins over UFC title contenders Alexis Davis, Miesha Tate, and Liz Carmouche. In their first match, Kaufman got the unanimous decision over Baszler.

Smith (6-4-1) quickly has become a fan favorite fighter through her stint at Invicta. Smith took veteran Kaitlin Young to a “Fight of the Year” draw in 2012, and would get a win in the rematch. With a win over TUF vet Raquel Pennington, Smith was on her way to possibly getting a UFC contract until her razor thin split decision loss to Kaufman a year ago in what was a contender for “Fight of the Year”.

Since her match with Kaufman, she dropped to flyweight and got a win over Jennifer Maia and a decision loss to InvictaFC champ Barb Honchak.

The match will air on Fox Sports 1.

Future Stars – Gianna Cilenti

Gianna Cilenti 01Nine year old Gianna “BamBam” Cilenti is preparing early for her future career as a MMA fighter.

The New York native trains grappling and kickboxing at Nanuet Tiger Schulman School and BJJ at Renzo Gracie’s Academy in new Jersey. Gianna also studied traditional karate at Thomas Clifford Martial Arts.

Cilenti has won several NAGA and grappling titles, having yet to taste defeat. She also has a 4-2 record in amateur kickboxing.

Wombat Sports: What got you interested in combat sports?

Gianna Cilenti: When I was 6 years old, I went to my friend’s karate birthday party and loved it! At that time I was in gymnastics and I cried every day because I wanted my mom to bring me back to the karate place. There is nothing else I wanted to do.

Wombat: What do you enjoy about it?

Cilenti: I love everything about it, I especially love competing. It keeps me fit and it is so much fun. I like challenging myself every time I get on the mat and every time I am scheduled for a fight. I try to compete once a month.

W.S.: How has your friends and classmates reacted to it?

G.C.: My friends are really into what I do and a lot of them will come watch me fight. Having my friends interested in what I do helps me challenge myself more because I want them to keep them interested and show them that not everything is easy and if you challenge yourself you can do anything.

W.S.: How about your family?

G.C.: My family are my biggest supporters and I wouldn’t be able to do this without my mom, dad and sister. When I compete I can always hear my family and friends cheering me on and it makes me work harder. There are times I am tired and my family encourages me to go train and work hard. I love when they encourage me because I perform my best. My family even turned our family room into a training place for me. My Deshi Jackie gave me mats and now I get to train whenever I want.

W.S.: Who do you look up to in fighting?

G.C.: The people I look up to most are my parents and my sister they are the best role models. Ronda Rousey is my idol. There are a lot of fighters and trainers I look up to; Kyoshi Clifford, Professors Massaro, Joshu Trizano, Maureen Shea, Jennie Nedell, Joshu Kendall, Chris Weidman, Eddie “Truck” Gordon and “Iron” Mike Fischetti.

W.S.: How do you feel about the future of females fighting?

G.C.: I hope that more girls get into fighting. Not every sport has to be for boys because girls are tough to. Ronda Rousey made it possible for me to have a chance to be in the UFC and I hope that when I become a world champion other little girls will want to fight and become a champ. At each competition I notice more and more girls competing. It’s great because at most Events the girls have their own division. I hope the girls division keeps growing.

Gianna Cilenti 02W.S.: What comes naturally to you in fighting? What have you found difficulty?

G.C.: Everything about combat sports comes naturally. I feel like I belong on the mat, the mat is part of me. My life will always be about training hard and fighting. I couldn’t imagine not participating in combat sports, it’s in my blood.

The hardest part for me is when I am competing and I get tired, I feel like I might not win, then I hear my sister rooting me on and I push hard.

W.S.: What are your aspirations in fighting?

G.C.: I want to be and will be a world champion. I want to get in the cage for the UFC and win that Belt. I want to win a Gold Medal in the Olympics and represent my Country. I know I can do it. I have so many people supporting me. I want other girls to look up to me someday and not be afraid of combat sports. I will be the Princess of the Cage.

W.S.: Anything you want to add/thank?

G.C.: I want to thank my mom for always taking me to training, taking me to fights and being my training partner when I want to practice my arm bar. My Dad who lets me choke him out. My sister for always being there for me. I also want to thank all my trainers and fighter friends who take time to train me, encourage me and support me. I have a great team.

Tuff-n-uff Strawweight Tourney Preview: Jianna Denizard

jianna denizad 01In the coming days, we will be previewing the upcoming Tuff-n-uff strawweight tournament. The winner will get a contract to InvictaFC.

The semi-finals will be April 11 in Vegas and can be seen online at GoFightLive.tv for $10.

A nominee of “Amateur Fighter of the Year”, Texas’s Jianna Denizard is a favorite to win the Tuff-n-uff tournament. Going 4-2 in 2013, Denizard will take on Jamie Moyle in the semi-finals.

Wombat Sports: How did you get started in MMA?

Jianna Denizard: I started out doing Muay Thai. My dad had done it for years and traveled the world doing it. During my sophomore year in high school I was invited by my dad’s close friend and coach to try out a class. 6 months later I had my first fight and couldn’t get enough of the sport. As time progressed women’s Mma became more popular so more opportunities opened up for me to fight Mma. It was a natural transition.

Wombat: Can you tell us something about your gym and training partners and how they have been helpful in training?

Denizard: I train out of Dominion Gym in Plano, TX under EshChadar Brown. When I came to Dominion about 3 or 4 years ago, I knew nothing about Muay Thai or Mma. It was my coach, Eshchadar that taught me everything I know and pushed me to be the fighter that I am today. This training camp has been one of the most intense training camps I have ever had. My teammates have helped me strengthen my weaknesses and make my strong points even stronger.

W.S.: Texas has become a proving ground of strawweight talent. How has it been fighting there?

J.D.: I think that because Texas is so big, there is a diverse group of strawweight women to choose from. That being said, every time I fought I always had to be ready for anything. I couldn’t just rely on what I was comfortable with but I had to be willing to go wherever the fight took me. I believe that in order to be successful in Texas, you have to be an well rounded fighter.

jianna denizad 02W.S.: You came back in 2013 with a vengeance, fighting six times and winning four. Do you think this has been an asset coming into the tournament?

J.D.: I definitely think it is. Because I fought so much in such a short time it became easier for me to fight, recover, and then be shape and ready to fight again. I could only do this because the way my coach trains us is to always be fight ready. Being that I am already used to that, it won’t be a problem for me to be at my optimum for the next round in June.

W.S.: These are going to be shorter two minute rounds versus the usual 3 minutes. How are you preparing and is it something you are looking forward to?

J.D.: The round time isn’t that big of a deal to me. If anything, I may have to be prepared to push the pace but i have experienced different round times so I don’t see that as a huge factor.

W.S.: What would it mean to you to win this tournament and fight for Invicta?

J.D.: It would be a dream come true! Ever since I heard of Invicta a few years ago, my coach and I have been pushing for me to get there. It would be a privilege to be signed to the biggest promotion in women’s Mma. I am greatful to TuffNuff for the opportunity to have a chance to get there. Its just another reason to fight harder.

W.S.: Anything you want to add/thank?

J.D.: I have to give all the glory and honor to my Lord and Savior for waking me up each day and giving me the strength to go out and do what I do. He is the one who gives me the strength and He is why I do this. I’d also like to thank my coach Eshchadar for teaching me everything I know about this sport and helping me both physically and mentally. Thanks to my teammates at Dominion Gym. lastly thanks to my family and friends who believe in me and support my journey in this sport.

UFC champion Ronda Rousey and Alexis Davis will throw down for the gold July 5th in Vegas. UFC president Dana White tweeted the news Friday night.

It was expected that Rousey would be defending the title against #1 contender Cat Zingano, but Zingano looks like she won’t be ready for the July showdown, so Davis got the shot.

Davis (16-5) has been on a five fight win streak since a majority decision loss to Sarah Kaufman in 2012. Her wins include finishes over current UFC signees Shayna Baszler and Amanda Nunes.  Davis last win was a decision over Jessica Eye.

Davis is a black belt in Brazilian and Japanese jiu-jitsu.

Rousey (10-0) has finished all of her opponents, with a TKO win over Sara McMann in her last bout. The Olympic medalist had armbarred the rest of her opponents, but will find a challenge in Davis’s ground skills.

The match will be a part of UFC 175 pay-per-view main card July 5 in Las Vegas.

Julianna Pena Talks Rehab; Return to the Cage

pena static tuf 01It was been a few months since Julianna Pena injured her knee during training for her next UFC fight. Although there have been stories back and forth about what happened, the “Venezuelan Vixen” seems to have taken the injury in stride and is working her way back to get to her next octagon appearance.

We caught up with Pena after cornering one of her teammates at Intense Cage Fighting’s event this past weekend.

Wombat Sports: How is the knee and rehab going?

Julianna Pena: Rehab is going great. I am doing it three times a week and it’s getting better every day.

Wombat: Are you still living with your parents while you are recovering?

Pena: I am not.

W.S.: Can you tell us a little about the accident and are you still training with the same team?

J.P.: You take a risk every time you train, and I got into a terrible wrestling accident. It happens. I am still with the same team and not going anywhere.

W.S.: What’s the timeline on the knee?

J.P.: A definite year.

W.S.: You are probably a bit anxious about getting back into the octagon…

J.P.: I am definitely being realistic about the situation and I don’t want to put the cart before the horse.

W.S.: Miesha Tate is currently at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Any plans on going down to train with her before your next UFC fight?

J.P.: I have been offered to go down there and train and I am definitely going to take the advantage of that when the time comes. Right now my main focus is getting my knee and myself 100% health and we’ll talk training camps when that time comes.

W.S.: You have a great training partner in Elizabeth Phillips who is coming off a win. Tell us a little about her.

J.P.: Elizabeth is doing great. She is an animal and everyone needs to look out for her because she is going to hit the scene big in 2014.

W.S.: How has it been since the TUF house? Have you been recognized more?

J.P.: I have been offered to do shows and all sorts of events. Everything has been great since “The Ultimate Fighter” and was blessed to be a part of the show on a high caliber stage.

W.S.: Does UFC president Dana White stay in contact with you at all?

J.P.: I talk to him every so often. I am going to Vegas to have dinner with him in May when I go to see UFC 173.

W.S.: They just announced Ronda Rousey versus Alexis Davis. Any predictions?

J.P.: Who cares? Whoever has the belt I want it.
